from Sarah:
I believe that we are all, fundamentally awesome and kick-ass. As Lady Gaga says, we were born that way. The thing is, to make life more exciting, there will be challenges and lessons to be learned. Awesome, right? So, when are we done with learning the lessons OR when do we get to put the finishing touch on the masterpiece of us??? The good news and good news is never! Or, to be more specific- not until you’re dead:).
Now why is that good news?? Well the coolest thing about being a human is that we are experiencing the mad, mad mystery of living- we get to experience desires longing- pure joy and ecstasy ( if we are willing) and to get to that stuff we get to also enjoy the opposite- thwarted longing, agony and failure. Yep that’s how it works:).
The good news is that if you become more willing and able to follow your FEEL GOOD- those times of strife and agony will be shorter lived…as you get more skilled at finding the feel good wherever you are.
For example, I had a truly agonizing experience after asking for a review of a manuscript I had written this past fall. It was a dooooozer. (more…)

Excerpt from a book draft (Sarah):
Life can be dry and dull but good God, why let it be? My first instructor in the hallowed halls of University of Minnesota Medical School in Duluth was Patrick Ward, an Irish man with a very large head (circumferentially and metaphorically ) who said the most outrageous, silly and shocking things ever uttered . Sometimes, on a bad day, I wondered whether he was the ONLY reason I ended up being drawn to Pathology. The man would spend hundreds of hours photographing white blood cells (in these pre-Photoshop days) and searching until he found several loaded with bacteria (from an overwhelming infection) with which he would create letters to spell words. Then he would ask an unsuspecting student to look at the microscopic photos “How do you think this patient contracted this infection?” Then he would giggle with delight when the images simply baffled them. Of course, the clumped bacteria spelled out “F**ing” because that bacteria was known to be sexually (more…)

I grew up in a family that placed a high value on intellect. I am a 4th generation physician. My Mom’s Father was a professor and, we read a lot and put those in academics on a bit of a pedestal at my house growing up. What I now realize is that intellect is wonderful BUT, its not necessarily the best place to go when you are trying to solve puzzles of the heart. In fact, sometimes I have to stop being so darn smart- so I can really look at how I am feeling and what my thoughts are causing me to feel. I learned this only recently and its POWERFUL stuff. There are any ways to look at your THOUGHTS- and one of the most simple ways is a process called “the work” of Byron Katie . I cannot say ENOUGH about the work of Byron Katie. Simple process- although it takes a bit of practice to do it- but the results are well worth it. What I have learned is that our intellect (brain- whatever you wan to call it) creates thoughts- and some of those thoughts are NOT HELPING US!! For example- “There is something wrong with me” is a very common one I have discovered (for myself and with clients). Yes- in our Western Culture- we glorify the mind- but frankly (more…)
